Yes. It has an accessible grease point on the end cap, so fitters on site can grease and inspect it as part of routine servicing. This design is heavily favoured by maintenance teams managing underground LandCruisers, since it means the component can be maintained on site rather than relying on a sealed unit that can’t be serviced.
Front prop shafts experience more articulation and more direct exposure to dust, mud and water than rear shafts, which generally carry more torque but see less movement. That’s why the front unit is usually the first to wear out.
Common early signs include a clunking noise when engaging drive, a squeak or grinding noise from underneath that changes with speed, visible play when the shaft is checked by hand, and vibration through the floor or chassis. All of these are worth acting on quickly given the safety risk of a driveline failure in the field.
A bigger joint spreads the load over a greater surface area and bearing volume, so it handles the constant articulation and shock loading of rough haul roads with less wear than a standard-size joint. It’s the single biggest factor behind the shaft’s extended service life.
